Joining an IXP

The joining requirements needed to connect to an IXP can differ substantially from one IXP to the next. The following three requirements are found at most IXPs:

  • ASN (Autonomous System Number) - this number is used in both the exchange of exterior routing information (between neighboring ASes), and as an identifier of the AS itself.
  • BGP-4 (Border Gateway Protocol Version 4) - Peering between Members' routers across the IXP will be via BGP-4.
  • The willingness to sign a connection agreement. - Each IXP has its own terms and conditions which a prospective customer must be willing to adhere to.

It should be emphasized that some IXPs demand more requirements than those listed above to gain membership. Full details of the joining requirements as per IXP can be viewed by following the links from the member IXP list.
